The Body Adorned / Dressing London

Why do we make our dress choices in today's capital?

The Body Adorned exhibition reveals how a diverse population clothe and adorn their bodies to find their place in the metropolis. Over time, saris, tattoo parlours, nail bars, distended ears and scarification have become a visible, everyday part of the London cityscape. But how did cultural adornments become integrated into urban London life? 

The exhibition considers how the movement of people, objects and ideas influenced London dress in the past and explores body adornment in today’s world city of London.

Ultimately we invite you to look at how you dress your body and why.

The exhibition features hundreds of stunning objects from the Horniman’s collections including adorned figures, early tattooing instruments and headdresses, a film installation by The Light Surgeons, several wardrobes of London residents exploring why they wear what they wear and urban street portraits taken by young people.

The exhibition is free, and open from Saturday 24 March until Sunday, 6 January 2013. It's open everyday, from 10.30am until 5.30pm.

V&A Ballgowns: British Glamour Since 1950 exhibition

EXHIBITION: This spring the V&A celebrates the opening of the newly renovated Fashion galleries with an exhibition of beautiful ballgowns, red carpet evening dresses and catwalk showstoppers.

Ballgowns: British Glamour Since 1950 will present more than sixty designs, including eveningwear by Norman Hartnell, Victor Stiebel and Zandra Rhodes alongside dresses fresh from the catwalk shows of Alexander McQueen, Giles Deacon, Erdem and Jenny Packman.

The exhibition will feature a selection of royal ballgowns, including Princess Diana's 'Elvis Dress' designed by Catherine Walker, dresses as worn by actresses and celebrities including Beyoncé, Sandra Bullock and Elizabeth Hurley, and a stunning metallic leather dress created especially by innovative designer Gareth Pugh.

An Imaginary Fly Listens In..

EAVESDROPPING: Imaginary chat between Elsa Schiaparelli and Miuccia Prada: 

a few snippets from the dialogue assembled by the curators of the Met exhibition. Parts of the dialogue will be included in the catalog and video installations throughout the show.  

A new show called, “Elsa Schiaparelli and Miuccia Prada: Impossible Conversations,” looks at the two designers who certainly wouldn't argue.

ES: Many men admire strong women, but they do not love them. Some women have achieved a combination of strength and tenderness, but most of those who have wanted to walk alone have, in the course of the game, lost their happiness. 

MP: I’m interested in the lives of women in general, which is why I love aprons. The apron is a recurring theme in my work because it is symbolic of women’s sufferance. ... It’s an emblem of women’s despair, their poverty, their passions. I love drama and romance. It’s one of the reasons why I love antique jewelry — I like to live the lives of other women.

This magazine supplement is to be presented in a physical form in a way that reflects your fashion shoot/magazine's identity. It should feel professional and beautiful - you have had plenty of time to make it so!

After achieving fame and notoriety with groundbreaking art happenings and events, she returned to her country of birth and is now Japan’s most prominent contemporary artist.

DESIGNING WOMEN: POST-WAR BRITISH TEXTILES

Fashion & Textiles Museum

Britain was at the forefront of international textile design in the 1950s and 1960s. The art of textile design radically changed after the Second World War and three women artists working in England in the 1950s were pivotal in this artistic revolution. The drab days of the War were transformed by the fresh, progressive designs of Lucienne Day (1917–2010), Jacqueline Groag (1903–86) and Marian Mahler (1911– 83). Designing Women: Post-war British textiles showcases their work beginning with Lucienne Day’s ‘Calyx’ pattern of 1951, featured at the Festival of Britain, and moving through textile commissions of the 1960s and 70s. The exhibition features more than 100 works.
